Hey, so I bought a Escort REDLINE radar detector (1000000% undetectable by spectre police used RDD(radar detector detector)... It's amazing, however I really can't find a spot where to mount it so it's least visible to police officers (it's illegal to have one in Ontario):((
Can somebody post some pictures of their installs or maybe advises. BTW this unit is windshield mounted. Also does anybody know what kind of tinting do our cars have on the top of the windshield? I read somewhere that metallic based tints affect negatively the performance of the unit, and ceramic based don't, does anybody know for sure if I can put it right behind the tint??? Nevertheless I am not so worried about the unit being seen from the front of the vehicle, the most important to me is that it can't be seen from the side and back(i.e. an officer pulling next to you on HWY or from behind). Also it is very important to be able to remove the unit immediately from its place to hide it away in case of a VERY close encounter...:)) :woot:

i'd like to know as well. Unfortunately, there's no real good spot to place it. The windshield and mirror doesn't leave much wiggle room. I was thinking about the top left corner of the driver side windshield but i think it sticks out too much to be left for theft.

I've got an Escort 9500ix installed between the roof edge and the rear view mirror, on the left side. I've never had any problems with detection.

Here you go. I applied a piece of screen protector (like the InvisibleShield product) onto the dotted section of the windshield to promote a smoother seal for the suction cups.

(Yes I know that the "dots" may get in the way of the detector, but I still pick up laser guns. Besides, if you're detecting them, you're probably tagged anyway.)

I have mine in a the same location, only difference is the have the radar sticking to the windshield as opposed to the "dotted" area, so mine is a little more left than yours Andy..

Unfortunately I can't put it in the same spot like you couse i have the LDW, so in that spot is the camera:) The passenger side in the same area is too far to remove the RD fast enough...I put it today in the top driver corner all the way up, and it looks like is the most optimal spot... P.s: Thank you for the pictures:) If I didn't have the LDW I would definitely install it same place.

How did you run the cable btw? From the fuse box? Did you have to remove any pillars (and how did you do it?) or you just stuffed the cable there?!

Yes, I ran the cable down to the driver's side fuse box. I simply hid the wires alongside the pillar.

You can also use a Stealth Cord; it's a little plug that lets you draw power from your mirror assembly.

I haven't used one, but it would be a neat trick.

WirelessAndy, today i got my direct wire to hook up to the fuse box ( https://www.escortradar.com/store/direc ... d-red.html )...May you please(if it is not too much to ask) take some pictures of where the cables went and how exactly did you clip it in the fuse box, and where the ground wire went:)) So let me get it right, you didn't have to take nothing apart to run the cable, you just stuffed it in between the window and the upholstery?Right? And when you got to the dashboard, where did you go with the cable:)))? thanks for help( i just wanna do it nice and clean) The pictures would be much appreciated.

Sergio,

I put my detector just underneath my rearview mirror using a Blendmount, it's a CNC'd aluminum mount that you attach to the rearview mirror. It was pricey-$79.00 as well as the cord $29.00 but it wires directly to the mirror which provides it power, so there's no snaking it through the pillar and hooking it to the fusebox. When I take the detector off to store it in the middle console, the mount is just barely noticeable below the mirror.

Great stuff:)I'm still looking into wiring it to the fuse box, I rather not tap into any wires, plus I've got the remote alarm for it so anyway I gotta run it down. But nevertheless yours is a ferrying clean install, it looks great, but I am 100 % sure cops would give me a 200$ gift card and seize my $600 rd...Toronto. I looked over today and it looks like the best spot for me is to put it either high up left or low left, as it is the least visible from outside(left from the mirror is not bad either, but I need to do my privacy tinting first when it warms up). So after I read numerous diy and saw many videos, I am still not quite sure how to hook up the cord in the fuse box...?

If I recall, the most difficult part was hiding the cable under/between the dash and the pillar, where the two meet.

I think I actually popped off the pillar cover to sneak the cable down. Try to avoid the airbag bits.

Tapping into the fuse box is easy. I used one of those "add a tap" connectors. You remove the fuse of choice and put it in the add-a-tap thing. Some will have a 2nd fuse slot for your new accessory (radar detector) plus a short length of wire you crimp your +12 wire for the radar.

I like these fuse taps. Works with our cars with the "small" bladed fuses.

http://www.amazon.com/Bussmann-BP-HHH-A ... 355&sr=8-1

If you check your service manual (I think) it may have a basic diagram of what fuses do what. If not, check the inside panel of the fuse door. If all that fails, because I don't recall if there's a cheat sheet on that door, consult the PDF for Power and Grounding.

Looking at the PDF, (PG-3 of the Power and Grounding sheet) I think I used fuse #7, which is labeled as CIGAR (12 volt cigarette lighter).

If you pull others, say, the ones for the power seats, you may end up wiping out seat memory presets. I did that once.

No problem. You're right, some local shops MIGHT have it. Be sure to get the mini versions!

Oh, don't be alarmed if the mini fuses in your fuse block are mini-er than the store-bought mini fuses. The ones that Infiniti put in are really stubby and keyed. They probably won't fit in your neighbor's non-Nissan. However, off-the-shelf spare fuses will fit in the Infiniti fuse block.

And don't do what I did: Lose the mini-micro-teeny fuse pulling it out of the block. I slipped and it fell behind the panel. Whups. In fact, while you're at the Source or other store, get some spare fuses and keep them in your glove box. You'll thank me later.

This thread is great, I definitely could have used a RD a few months ago when I got caught by a speed trap.

that's exactly the reason why i got a RD...If the cops would be just checking for big time speeders i would never bother, but here in TO these suckers put speed signs right off the highway for 40km/h and hide and give tickets...very annoying because you basically have to brake EXTREMELY strong to get to 40 from 120 in less than 40m...

To Sergio - Did you ever post pics of your direct install to the fuse box on the drivers side? I'd like to see those... and would like to do the same. And I was thinking of mounting my 9500 on the lower left hand side of windshield. Thoughts? Thanks.

Most of our highways in Ontario are detected by plane using the painted lines on the road. Don't know how the detectors going to help out here. It may just give you a false sense of confidence to speed.

EDIT: Here's the article http://www.dclegal.ca/Aug081.pdf

I was trying to be helpful so you don't get roadside suspension. I've been driving here for my entire life and know for a fact that some officers who still use traditional radar detection sometimes have it set to indicate speeding as high as 130 kmh. I don't know why you would ever need to drive faster than that especially on our highways full of stupid drivers. It's not always you mr race car driver with decades of driving experience and race car driver like reflexes that is the problem you know that right?
