I took my Q (94t) in for rack boots this morning. I work across the street form the shop so I go over regularly to check on the Q when she is in for service. The tech showed me that the rack is leaking and there is a rubber seal/gasket that is not pushed into the rack on both sides. The seals are in good shape but I know they are supposed to be pushed into the rack and not just kinda hanging about. Is this cause for a new rack or is there a way to set those seals were they belong? My car has about 70K on it. Thanks fellas!

Tell us about the fluid. That could be a clue to your problems. I don't think anyone has experienced the rack seals falling out.

Sure is a shame abour rack seals leaking after 7-8-9 years of exposure to the acidic corrosive [to rubber] UNCHANGED ATF/ps fluid.

I thought the same thing Denis but all of us didn't buy or Qs brand new, we have to deal with the abuse of previous owners. The old fluid looked like Dr. Pepper when I changed it (shortly after i bought the car). I put in Mobil 1 ATF but the damage has already been done I guess.

I'm not getting enough of a leak to see on the garage floor but I can smell it at times and when the car is driven first thing I get a little smoke from the fluid burning off. One of my hoses leading from the reservoir was loose and tightening it helped.

If anybody has any info on those seals I mentioned please let me know.

Generally when you buy a rebuilt rack thats all you get resealing and cleaning, maybe some paint.....The worn pinion gear costs so much [micropolished and induction hardened] like $200 that it makes the rebuilding too expensive so they just rebuild those racks that are close to spec...........not too much side to side play but more than new.

Most people put up with rebuilt sloppiness to save the extra $750 vs brand new.

You'll just have to ask Scottsdale if they can get the seals.

Strange my rack never got the PS fluid changed until 60k [5 years] but then it got annual flushes thereafter [and 2 sets of new boots and mount bushings]........over 13 years old [246k] and never a leak...........vs your 10 and 70k leaker.

Maybe 5 years is the limit for PSF.

It is actually subjected to more stress than when used as ATF because of the much higher pump pressure = shear.

Try some seal swelling PS stop leak as the Mobil 1 doesn't have much seal sweller additive........BG makes a fine PS Conditioner!
