Well my wifes 2001 Maxima that is leaking fluid was looked at today and they said its the rack & pinon leaking & needs replacement at a cost of $1,300!!! Another place said $1,000. My gosh I did not know it was that expensive to do. Lotta labor cost, must be a bear to replace???

Yeah they're not a fun task. Sorry to hear that... I was hoping when I saw your problem that you just needed a new line.

I just looked up a rough price from Advance Auto Parts and the part is $513.99 + $140.00 core charge(charged until you return the old part to them off of the vehicle). So the $1,000 quote doesn't seem like they're ripping you off too much. I'd still try shopping around a bit first if you have time to do so.

Yeah, that's a pretty standard price. I think I paid $1200 for steering rack and one front lower control arm replacement together a couple years ago on my '93...could be wrong, though...memory's kinda fuzzy.
