The rack itself has two hardlines which are screwed into a fitting thats threaded into the rack tube itself,i would have to guess if mine was leaking the 2 hard lines that are mounted on rack would be the first place to look, they are the most likely place for a leak to occur.
When dealing with things hydraulic, which is what a power steering unit is, the most likely place for leak is where shafts slide in and out of a "tube" through the end seals. In the case of the power steering of this car both ends of the rack tube have seals. There are also pistons within the tube that wear and there could be fluid by-pass. A repair would consist mostly, of end seals and piston seals or "rings".
The FSM has a complete display of all the parts and how to R & R if one is so inclined. It's not really a difficult job but may seem so and thus most folks will opt for a rebuilt unit and simply R & R.
I have not had to do any rebuild on these types of power steering systems but have done some hydraulic ram rebuild or repair used on "heavy" equipment. Not a big deal at all.
