ok guys.....i went to get two new front tires and the freakin store DOBBS ..told me my rack and pinion is going bad and that i have a bad tie-rod. So

he said that **** is leaking all over the frayed boots and thats whats causing it....they told me it'd be about a grand for a new rack....but anyway...i wanted to know what u guys thought. Is this something i can do my self or with a couple of buddies? Or should i have it done professionally.

thanks guys.

I JUST DID MY TIE RODS LAST WEEKEND AND I HAVE DONE A HANDFUL OF RACKS, IT IS EXTREMELY EASY. I CAN GET A NEW RACK FOR ROUGHLY $200, TIE RODS AND ENDS FOR $175(TEIN), BOOTS FOR $30, AND NEW FLUID (3 QUARTS) FOR $15. SO WITHOUT LABOR YOU ARE BELOW HALF YOUR QUOTE PRICE.

NAPA HAS IT, AUTOZONE CAN GET IT, CHECKER CARRYS THEM. ANY AUTO PARTS DEALER CAN GET THEM ESSENTIALLY. THE PRICES I LISTED ARE MY COST THOUGH, I WORK FOR A FLEET.

Dunno about pricing since i got a clean/good condition R&P from a junk yard, works fine but might wanna go new(i couldnt afford it or i would of). And work is easy, just put the front up on jack stands, undo the r&p which is like 5 nuts/bolts total and the power steering lines(hardest part, which is still easy) and then pull it out and put the new one in and connect the power steering lines and bolt everyting back on and you should be good to go. Easy, dont waste money taking it to a shop, you can do it yourself easily. Good luck.

NEW MEANS NO PROBLEMS FOR A WHILE, USED MEANS WELL THAT IT COULD BE DAMAGED... ON ITS LAST LEG... ABUSED... ETC.
