Lift up the front end, grab ahold of a wheel, and move it side to side. If there is movement, try and find where the movement is coming from: outer tie rod end to steering knuckle, inner tie rod end to steering rack, or (you'll have to remove the dust boot for this) the steering rack itself. If the rack is leaking fluid (like mine was, real bad), then its time for a new one.
Seriously, i just put a reman rack in not 3 weeks ago, took about 3 hours, TOTAL, including jacking the car up on jackstands. You dont have to do it with the motor out, like i read everywhere, it was quite easy (for a former mechanic). I then replaced the rack bushings with Nismo hard rubber ones about a week after i put the rack in, and again, no problem. I didnt even have to disconnect the tie rod ends or remove the wheels. No problems.
