How do you know if your rack and pinion is messed up? how can i test out the rack and pinion to find out ?

ive heard if you take one of those extendable magnets and dip it in the powerstering fluid and swirl it around in there. some times you can tell if you need a rack if you have metal shavings in the fluid.
