ok so i just bought a 92 coupe the other day with alot of shaking at low rpms. i thought it was something small. so i got the car and its only running on cylinder 1 and 2. cylinders 3 and 4 have fuel, compression and spark, im stumped and i dont know what it could be? the car runs so timing can't be too bad off.cylinder 3 and 4 do nothing when i take out the plugs. anybody have any clues?

symptoms-the motor shakes alot-smokes blue smoke-backfiring when accelerating

check the wires, it might be plugged in the wrong, if they are right, then that sounds like your injectors are shot. Also your rings are bad if its burning blue

wires are brand new, if they were plugged in the wrong way the car would not turn on. i already took out all the injectors and checked them individually and they are fine. i think the smoke is the gas being burnt in cylinder 3 and 4 because its not burning in the chamber, besides it doesn't smoke that bad at all. just regular old car smoke. the motor has 164,000. anybody have any other suggestions

p.s. the rings are fine, i already checked

If you are showing blue smoke then you are burning oil. Fuel is black smoke. White is coolent.

Double check the plug wires are in the proper places. The car can run if they are wrong, depending on how far off they are.

If plug wires are ok, and injectors are ok, and you have compression then I would start thinking ECU.

Agreed on the wires. If it can run on 2 cylinders, it can run with two wires swapped.

have you tried different injectors on 3 and 4? I dont think you can tell if anything is wrong just by looking. Im thinking either you bad injectors or your valves are stuck

was there a cam swap on this car?..this sounds like a bent valve issue or just crappy cam timing...pop your valve cover off and rotate the #1 to TDC (top dead center) then go to the cam timing link on this forum and print that info with the pics..compare the pics with the position of your cams...if it looks off..then you have found your issue...im asuming you have the ka24de

I have seen on certain Nissan motors where the signal plate in the distributor will get soaked in oil because the distributor shaft seal begins leaking. When this happens, the car will run like crap if it runs at all. I still might be worth taking the valve cover off and manually turning the engine over to see if any valves are hanging up. But if you had bent valves, you would think the compression test would show that.....

If enough oil is getting into the cylinders to create visable smoke then things are not fine.

lilke ilovesideways asked, What are the compression test numbers?

Maybe the numbers are on the low side but not exactly bottomed out? In which case would explain why there is only a little smoke.

Bent valves would kill the compression. How do the plugs look? Are they covered in crap? Gapped correctly? Any vac. leaks anywhere? Will it fire on all 4 cylinders if you spray starting fluid in there or something to that effect?

doesn't mean they can't be fouled, or covered in fuel, or bone dry. I didn't ask how new they were, I asked what they looked like. How about the other suggestions, any luck?
