I know that slotted and drilled rotors have too much mass taken off of them, but how come racecars usually use them? is it because it's a bigger rotor so you can lose more mass?

larger diameter, thicker = more mass, makes up for the holes.

This is how big brake kits work. Take X amount of material out via cross-drilling, compensate for it with greater diameter rotor assy.
