The July issue of Turbo magazine ran a short but good article on an event called the Qualcomm Stadium RaceLegal.com drags. It's basically an 1/8 mile strip in the parking lot of the stadium, and the event runs every Friday night till 1am. The event is also "supported by the city gov't, as well as the SDPD". The article goes on to say that the cops are involved, bringing their own project cars down to compete. Who wouldn't want to race a cop??? Team Venom, among others, showed up on the night that the Turbo photo crew was there. They reported attendance of 2000 spectators and about 200 racers per event. Local speed shops and food vendors are there in the parking lot also. Sure, 1/8 isn't that great, but what a terrific idea this is!! Everybody from the cops, to the speed shops, to the kids driving mom's Accord can race legally for a mere $15. All in all, I'd say it was a great article, and a very good idea.
I'm curious if your own cities are hosting or supporting events such as this to try and slow the rising death toll and keep the racing off the street. This is the only *somewhat* large-scale event of it's kind that I've heard of. Let me know, thanks!
