Raced a STOCK G35 Coupe twice, in two different Zs, lost twice? WTF?!?! Explain!

Alright, a kid in town has an Auto 04 G35 Coupe, stock except for some Motegi wheels. I have an 03 Enthusiast, 6spd, stock. My mom has an 06 Auto Touring, loaded out, but stock.

I first raced this G in my 6spd, 4 times. Two from a dig, two from a slow roll. He gets me out of the hole every time, given, seeing it's an auto, and from the roll, he holds a 1 car, 1 1/2 car lead till we shut down. It's really consistent.

So after that, I think something is wrong with my car, maybe the clutch, maybe the throttle body, vacuum leak, something. But I accept the race and go on.

Well, my Mom just bought the 06, 20k miles on it, flawless one owner car. I'm rolling it one night and run into G35 kid again, we talk and decide to roll. I'm feeling pretty confident at this point, seeing as we're both autos. We go out and go from the dig again, 3 honks, he out launches me again, pulls a couple car lengths ahead while I play catch up. Go figure. 2nd time around, I tweak my launch and leave a little faster, still, he pulls me. 3rd time, 20mph roll, he pulls ahead, stays there as usual. 4th time, same results.

Can someone explain to me what's going on? I'm not a novice to racing or these cars. I know these cars are identical in many ways, but you'd think the Z being lighter would have the advantage. Does the VQ in the G have a different tune then the Z or something?

EDIT: And for the flamers, we raced on an abandoned airstrip.

First off, take it to the track. Safety issues aside, a 1/4 mile track will have timing equipment that will eliminate the variable of response time. Since a person is starting the race, there is no way to actually confirm that the 2 cars are starting their acceleration at the same time or from the exact same speed. While it may seem trivial, if 2 cars had identical acceleration curves, then if one got a 0.1 second headstart, then the compound effect of the difference in acceleration over time would create an ever increasing gap in distance until the first car hit its maximum speed. And, in such a case, the second car would never catch up.

Without accurate timing equipment, there is no way to gauge 2 cars that are so close together in performance. Its possible he got lucky and got an engine that is slightly up on power from the factory as well. Perhaps it is broken in better.

Dyno the car and see if you fall within stock horsepower levels. And again I agree about taking it to the track.

Maybe he has some mods but is not telling you!

i got a 04 6spd Z and it bone stock, i have repeatly laid the smack down on both auto g35 and other 6spds, in which my friend owns...however my boy disappeared for alittle i seen him riding a peddle bike, so i ask where is the G' at he said he wanted to take advantage of the weather so he was peddleing.... this was suspicious to me so a few days later i seen him driving so we went on the highway and fooled around it was real close we were pulling on each other for a 5 miles so we turn around and come home via side streets.... so at a red light he starts talking smack bout what just happend and suggest we go from a stop.....well heres where the suspicion comes back, he took a few days and had a valve body on his trans redone by i think stillen (could be wrong).... but i'll tell you it made all the difference inn the world he got me from A to B so take it into consideration of what he could have done and what he could be keeping from you. that is the killer sleeper upgrade for autos, call him out see what he says...........

use some ethics though ask him on the DL cause if he is like me or the people i hang with he'll denie it and act as if its just his skills, lol

Uhm...no. At least in regards to the G37

You have the HR motor, good for 306hp. G37 has the VHR motor, good for 330hp. I own G's with both motors and the standard HR would get it's butt handed to it by the VHR.

This means nothing. I watched a stock 2008 350Z Base beat an 09 G37 Coupe S Sport 3 out 3 races. In most cases hourse power isn't the end all - be all of how a race will turn out. Take the 2009 Lotus Exige for example. It only makes 257HP yet is goes 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 secs.

Lots of cars are faster than mine. I'm only good for mid-upper 13's stock.

Just buy one of these, God knows they certainly didn't belong in the GTI.

I have no issue with the HR Z's. They are lighter than the G's and do a great job. In general, I would call it a drivers race (HR equipped Z vs G37). The '08 Z is rated around 5.1 sec 0-60 where the 2008 G37 is rated around 5.2 0-60 (Motor Trend) and the 2009 G37 is rated around 5.0 0-60 (Motor Trend). Of course, it depends on which review you are looking at.

everything i say is very true.. all u can do the same in the hrZif your good enough to get its power out.. that ismy best 1/4 in it was 13.339 stocknow with testpipes/exhaust/injenduelcai

i probly get low 13.1s + driving experiance .. the Z is very fast and is underestimated

Evo,Sti are fast off the Go once ur rolling its over for them... ive had many encounters with them. just like with little honda kids lol

^---5 gears ~300 ponies stock...in 1992. better have that Jim wolf love under the hood then its all over.

C5 vette "easy" is pretty questionable...those definitely do 12's all day. although i think only 10% of corvette drivers have actually used all of its power before.
