Let me preface this by saying the Pathfinder's mission is to be an economical family hauler and tow vehicle. I'd like to have an option for light offroading like forest roads, maybe WA backcountry discovery route.

I find it really hard to research options for underbody protection, because the previous gen obviously was a capable offroader. Are there any skidplates available? To make it a little safer to explore the limits of the vehicle.

I see the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail and Toyo Open Coutnry AT3 ($225 ugh...) at tirerack. Any recommendations?

I think you're trying to make this Pathy out for something for which it was never intended. Being a crossover, it's really a glorified minivan. The clearances are much too low for average off-roading, and it isn't really a true 4x4. I have read where some have taken theirs to the dunes with deflated tires, but unless you want to wreck your exhaust, I'd stay off the trails. There are lift kits available, but only provide minimal lift for towing.

Oh yeah it's a lifted minivan ... doesn't mean it can't be taken offroad. Or improve traction.
