I picked up a 1998 Pathfinder with the manual transmission. I used to have a 2001 with an automatic transmission, so I know that in the auto...the center diff can lock in the transfer case. Just wondering if this is also the case with the manual transmission versions (such as in 4H or 4L)? The manual does not seem to suggest so.

I have the Chilkoot Edition (Canadian) so it has a factory limited slip rear diff. I'd also be curious on if anyone can comment how effective the factory LSD is.

im also curious at what locks, what doesn't.

Does having an LSD make a difference in this?

Factory lsd is better then my open diff. Factory one has 75lb's of breaking force, you can rebuild the axle in the rear with better clutches and discs from a frontier aftermarket kit, it will give you more of a super LSD, 220lb's of breaking force. You can find the latter on NPORA, theres a guy that did it.

Not sure what you mean by center diff locking.. this is more a european way of talking about a TRANSFER CASE. This is what you call a center diff lock i believe...

Basically the pathfinder only comes with center diff locking mecanism (transfer case). It LOCKS or TRANSFER the power equally between the front and rear diff. you can switch this off or on with (on your case) a lever next to regular shift stick. For the 4HI, it can be done while rolling. For the 4LO, you need to put the vehicle in neutral.

They do not have front or rear differential locking mecanism. Some have limited slip different (LSD) that uses friction plates in the diff in order to create some resistance so that both wheel will turn on slipery surfaces.... On my end, I have installed both front and rear arb lockers, so you could say my truck has front, rear and center diff locks... Hope it's clearer like this...

Thanks, that clears things up. Was curious on how the transfer case in a manual transmission works.

In the automatic transmission Pathfinder, you can put the selector switch on "Auto", of which the locking symbol will not light up (in the dash) indicating that the center diff is not locked. This lock symbol only comes on when the transmission is in 4H or 4L.

actually this is only true about the 01-04 r50. They have another powertrain (3.5 with the same transmission, but the atx14a transfer case). In your case you have the 3.3 with the tx10a transfer case. There is no auto option for the transfer case in your r50 years (96-00)... And no matter if it is automatic or manual transmission, the transfer case can be locked the same way..
