I know that the R390 engine was based on the earlier R89 and R92CP engines. These were called the VRH35Z and came out around the same time as the VH45DE was released. I am convinced that the pedigree is a lot closer than some people would tend to believe.
For those of you who played Grand Turismo 4, there is a driving test that uses the R89 or R92CP (don't remember offhand) and it is a wild ride approaching 250MPH. If only it had a 6 speed manual instead of just a 5 speed.
A few factoids:
The GT1 is a race only car but the regular R390 was actually sold as a production vehicle in order to meet the entrance requirements.
The red/black open wheel car above is actually an R391 (I think this is N/A)
The headlights used in the R390 are from the 300ZX Z32 possibly because they meet EU regulations, and/or possibly just to fit in with nissan styling (also the Lamborghini Diablo uses the same headlights because of the same problem and covers up the Nissan logo).
The engine research was performed in 1983-1987 and is written up in an SAE whitepaper. (Imagine what Nissan is working on now that you won't see for 10+ years!)
