Hi,
So Ive had this problem that I would like to revisit now that my RB'd S13 is up and running. I long ago purchased a clean low mileage r33 GTST rear diff. I remember that it locked perfectly when I bought it as in, I grabbed the stubs and tried to rotate them independent of each other and they immediately locked, thinking this meant that all was beuno I brought it home and prepared for install.

During the install, since I wanted to keep my stock 6 paired holes axles I decided to swap the half shafts out of the stocker and into the new diff. Now I remember that the axles shafts were different lengths when I compared them, but were the same spline count. After swapping the stubs, the diff no longer locked with hand pressure. I thought nothing of it until after the install was over and drove it....it felt exactly like an open, as in NO LOCK.

Now I know there is a possibility that the diff was old and worn but why did it lock prior to the stub change?

More worryingly, Its been years since I did the swap, and the car has sat for almost as long, so I was very young and stupid when I did the swap. Thinking back, there is a GREAT possibility that I switched the 6 bolt shafts when putting them in :gapteeth: . Could this lead to the diff malfunction?

heres a pic that might show what Im talking about, here the 300zx and s13 shafts are being compared.

Simple answer. You cannot run non vlsd output a vlsd otherwise you are left with an open diff again.

What he said ^ If the output shafts you put in look like the one on the right, then yeah its just going to function like an open diff because you don't have the extra splines there to engage the viscous coupling. If they do look like the one on the left (one should actually be longer than the other) and you switch them side for side, the diff still wont work and your still be stuck with an open diff.

Ahhh I see. So to re-engage the viscous part of the diff, I need to go back to the factory stubs?
My next question is, are there any stubs I can get that will let me keep the stock axles?

If not, what axles/stubs do i need to get?

thanks for the help guys!

95-96 j30 stubs or jdm silvia stubs are the only ones that you would be able to use to keep you're stock axles. Other than that if you were going to use different axles to match the r32 diff, 92-94 j30 axles are the only ones I know of that will work.

If you're talking about the 5 bolt output shafts (matching the R32 diff) NA Z32 axles will also work.

So found a local guy with 5 bolt stubs and axles from a J30, not sure on the year, will ANY 5 bolt J30 axles/stubs work for me? or just the 92-94 ?

If those are 5 bolt than they are 92-94. other vehicles have an axle that can fit the ps that's five bolt but no matter what, if you are going five bolt, the only axle that fits the driver side is the j30.

Yes, but don't you have the r33 stubs? Aren't they 5 bolt?

I might not have made it clear in my op, but I took those stubs out and left them at the shop thinking I would never need them. Its been almost 3 years and god knows what happened to them lol. But the original stubs were 5 bolt yes, the J30 stubs should work right? I figured that both diffs are R200, just have diff final drives.

Yeah they will work.... I was just confused why you needed them, when the diff came with the 5 bolt. All makes sense now.
