I read where you stated it repaired itself, but I had a similar problem on a 91 Q45. Turns out the outside temperature sensor was going bad intermittently. When it was reading incorrectly, it thought the outside temp was something stupid like -150 degrees. So using that as a reference point, it had to blow fire out of the vents to get the temperature *up* to 65 deg or whatever I had it set on.
Do our cars have a similar setup?
