So I was reading the little FAQ on RB25 swaps Kamin wrote and I have a question about the driveshaft...Kamin states that...

"DriveshaftThe cheapest route for this is to open the phone book and start calling offroad shops and driveshaft shops. You will generally spend $225-$275 for a custom shaft if you bring them the parts. They will tell you where to measure and then make the shaft.

Shops like Mckinney do make a bolt in 1 piece shaft provided you are using their mounts but they are rather expensive."

What I want to know is if I use the R33 crossmember and mounts can I use the Mckinney driveshaft? or do HAVE to use the mckinney mounts to make their driveshaft bolt on? I just need some verification on this...thank you.

Don't quote me on this, but im pretty sure you cant use Mckinneys driveshaft. Why would you waste so much money on it anyway? I had an aluminum one built from the "Driveshaft Shop" for $475. Mckinney charges $500 for a steel one.

Ya if you use the R33 crossmember and mounts I am pretty sure you need a custom driveshaft made. What I did was get a 300z driveshaft ($160) then took that and my KA driveshaft to a place and had a custom one made for $205

So the 300zx driveshaft will mate up to the RB25 transmission? I thought so, but I need confirmation. I am basing the fact that you have an RB25 on the pic in your sig.

you dont need the whole 300zx shaft, just the "yoke" or part that goes into the transmissionand yes the rb25 uses the one from a 300zx na 5 speed.

i saw this while reading the popular RB25-->S14 write up by Sport Compact Car. Is it true, or does the yoke have to be from the NA model.

you need the yoke, but the 300zx shaft cannont be seperated.. as in the couplers and U joints are not rebuildable its a one time deal, out of the 2 shops I went to neither could build me a shaft using the used 300zx shaft, they had to order a new rebuilbable yoke/joint then made me one up.

Sure you could hack weld something together but I sure as hell wouldnt want that thing spinning and xxxx rpms under me.

could you describe the problem in a bit more detail?

why did the shops say they could not seperate the yoke and shaft?

Is the skylines yoke able to be seperated for the driveshaft?

exactly how is the yoke connected to the driveshaft?

I wish I could remember where, but in my research I have read that the 300zx yoke has been successfully used. Is there anyone on the boards who has used the 300zx yoke? If so could you describe to me the process by which you were able to mate it to the 240 shaft?

well basically, I had an entire 300zx driveshaft, I brought it to my local shop, he looked at it, told me basically the driveshaft is a throw away shaft. Meaning only can be used on a 300zx, or something with the same slip yoke, that happened to be just as long... He said there is no way to break down the shaft, and rebuild it, and that I needed to get brand new rebuildable yokes. aka aftermarket.

I didnt like his quote, so I went else where, they told me the same thing, just at a different price. So they ordered the same slip yoke as the 300zx just aftermarket that is rebuilable, as in you can take it apart, then put it back together, unlike the OEM 300zx shaft.

So there I got a brand new one off one peice driveshaft.

Basically the shops couldnt just weld a used 300zx yoke onto a shaft, bc there was no way they could properly balance it. Sure you might find someone who is willing to do it. But thats up to you... I wouldnt do it.
