I apologize for asking a question that some may find stupid, however I've been searching for info for an hour and I can't find a clear answer.

Are there major differences in the R32 rb25det and R33? It seems like all the info I can find is on the R33, however I was just informed by my engine supplier that the motor I'm getting is from an R32.

Any info would be appreciated.

Ok, thanks guys... that would definately explain why I couldn't find any info on it. Sorry for the n00b mistake. It also tells me that I'm dealing with an importer that doesn't really know any more than I do at this point.

Thanks again.

Here in Australia we have the same problem, there are only a few select importers that know their stuff.

Upon purchasing my rb25 head I was told they only had r33 rb25 heads, I went down to check it out, lo and behold it was an R32 RB25de head, he still insisted it was an r33 head even after I pointed out the differences (no vct, inlet mani/plenum, rocker covers & injectors).

I obviously bought it as I was after the non-vct head for my rb30det hybrid.

To answer your question.

The R32 RB25:

Only NON-TURBONo Inlet Variable camSlightly smaller inlet portsNo piston oil squirters (due to it being N/A)Top feed injectorsDifferent plenum/inlet manifoldDifferent rocker coversDifferent cam belt cover (lacks the buldge on the inlet side due to non variable cam timing)

The R33 RB25:

Came in both Non-turbo and TurboN/A and T came with variable cam timinglarger inlet portsPiston oil squirters only in the turbo blockSide feed injectorsDifferent plenum/inlet manifold (runners appear to be a little more evenly distributed)Different rocker covers (pvc breather shoots out the side rather than T'ing off the rocker cover balancer or what ever its called)Different cam belt cover due to vct, has a nice buldge where the inlet cam is located.

Variable cam timing is definitely worth while, higher average power, which is what gets a car moving quicker to its peak power where you spend 0.2secs and change gear. :P

Ask if it has variable cam timing, if so then its definitely an r33+ motor.

I called them back and actually talked to the guy that is in charge of ordering, receiving and testing the motors... he definately knows his stuff, so I'm going to stick with them.

I'm pumped, I almost have everything else here, so as soon as I get the motor I'll start the swap.

So what is he saying it is?

An Rb25DET out of an R32. If thats the case he sadly does not know his stuff. UNLESS the r33 rb25det was dropped in to the r32 in japan.

I have engine manuals here that list all the motors released in the R32 chassis.

mugengsr,

With regards to the head being the same as the rb20det.

The R32 Rb25DE head does have the same designed ports as the rb20det BUT they larger, not quite as large as the r33 rb25det but pretty damn close. The valve size of the r32 rb25de head is the same as the r33 rb25det, from memory thats 34.5mm inlet and 29mm exhaust. Way bigger than the piddle rb20det's inlet of 30mm and exhaust of ~27mm.

There's quite a few r32 rb25de heads running on rb30 bottom ends easily pushing 300rwkw or 400rwhp, the ever so slightly smaller port does not seem to have the r32 rb25 head making any less power than a r33 rb25det head on the same boost/turbo setup.

So would the RB25DE head bolt to the RB20DET? If so you would get the bigger valves and the duration of the na cams. I know nothing of the RB25DE so hope that is question isn't to flamable.

The R32 RB25DE head won't fit on the rb20 unfortunately, this is due to the combustion chamber size. The RB25 runs 86mm pistons were as the rb20 is smaller, off the top of my head I don't remember the size of the rb20 pistons.

The r32 rb25de also runs a smaller duration exhaust cam (232dur with 7.3mm lift) vs the rb20det's exhaust cam of (240dur with 7.8mm lift).Inlet cams are the same.

From memory the rb20det runs 0 degree's overlap, the rb25de runs 8.

So in short, the rb25de inlet cam is the same as the rb20det however the exhaust cam runs slightly smaller dur and lift. BUT the n/a cams run more overlap, i presume to bleed off a little of that high 10.5:1 or what ever it is n/a compression and shift the power band a little higher in the rpm where it can be used best.

It's an R33 Rb25det, series one to be exact. He sent me a startup video, tons of pics, and a picture of the odometer in the half cut... 55,000km.
