Same dilema here. I have opted to cut the lines, flare the ends, and run a seperate cooler....Trying to currently figure out where to mount said cooler though...

Is a cooler necessary? I was just going to take out the cooling loop and run the line directly from the pump to the fitting on the PS rack.

there is a write up on custom presure lines on Racebread for your RB pump to rack. Might help.

Yeah that's what I was going to do to except for not use that expensive of line. (regular stainless) But he doesn't use a cooling loop in the writeup and I was wondering if there is a need for it or not.

I was going to run an auxiliary cooler in route, couldn't hurt plus one from summit with AN' fittings wouldn't put me too far back.

Forgot about this issue, haven't had to deal with this yet. I'd like to see some pictures of other solutions besides custom stainless lines, if any of you care to crawl under and take a pic.

Darius dunno about your experiences, but at track events during summer here we see lots of cars boiling PS fluid over due to it overheating (perhaps it's also from overfilling by the owners....) I think a cooler would be a wise choice, there's a reason Nissan spent an extra $.25 on each S13 to put that hardline loop in.

the stock cooler is worthless, just remove it and get a cooler out of a junkyard car or run a line back up to the resivor.been doing that for a few years now on my car and havent seen any adverse problems.

Not sure what you mean.. Sounds like a bypass line spliced between the pump and rack that dumps back to the reservoir? What purpose does this serve, to lower rack inlet pressure? Sorry I'm lost.

i think carl just means return it from the rack straight back to the resovoir (i.e. no cooler at all)

Darius - I don't know if it's safe to use regular stainless hose. Haven't had personal experience with stainless hose failing, but i think regular stainless hose has a much lower burst pressure rating. If you're trying to save a bit vs. the overpriced Earl's line, try gonig to a hydraulic shop and getting some of their stuff.

Hey gawdzilla, are there pros/cons to installing the cooler between the pump and rack instead?

Everything I've ever read about stainless lines & AN fittings says you need the ultra high pressure hydraulic lines and fittings for steering or brake use. Also read somewhere the PS system can build up to something ungodly like 3000psi on full lock?

con: placing the cooler on the high pressure side will probably cause it to burst?

I run ss braided line... but I'm right hand drive and thus better than you </sarcasm>... but seriously I run ss line and works just fine for me. Easy/clean to mount and go.

Not sure if your in the S13 chassis or s14 mine is s13 and the SOHC motor runs the power-steering pump on the opposite side than the RB. I found a DOHC car in the junk yard and got the lines, No modification needed they bolt up nicely and work perfect. Cheap too 20$

his lines are fine, they appear to be dohc lines.issue at hand is the 'cooler', the return line is low pressure so any oil proof rubber hose will be fine.like i said before just put an aftermarket cooler on the return line from the rack to the resivor or no cooler at all.
