Turns out that my VLSD on my 89 SE hatch is now open, rather than limited slip. I've got an R200 on the floor from a 93 J30. It's an ABS diff, so I know I can't use the pinion. If the pinion is good in my S13, is it possible to use just the rings from the R200? Diffs are hard to find around here and I'm trying to use what I've got. I'd rather not try to find half shafts. Let me know.

Only if they are the same ratio. If you put the wrong toothed pinion or ring gear in there bad thing will happen. Why not just take the LSD unit form the J30 and put it back in your using your pinion and ring-gear.?

So you mean use the discs and whatnot from the J30 and essentially rebuild the S13 LSD then, right? Assuming there's not a problem with my current ring and pinion, that is. They use the same discs and everything, just not the ring and pinion?

Pop the carriers out and take ring gear off of the J30 carrier and put the ring gear from your current diff onto it. Press it back into the housing you want to use, shim it, check the backlash and call it a day.

Fantastic, I don't need to buy any more parts (yet). Anyone have a better diagram than this?
