From the December 1990 issue of Road & Track:

The Ten Best Cars In The World (in alphabetical order - bolding is mine):

Acura NSX BMW M5 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 Ferrari 348tb & ts Infiniti Q45 Maxda MX-5 Miata Mercedes-Benz 300E Mecedes-Benz 500SL Nissan 300ZX Turbo Porsche 911 Carrera 4

The Best Car In Each Of Ten Categories:

Best Coupe/Sedan, less than $10,000: Nissan Sentra XE Best Coupe/Sedan, $10,000-$17,000: Honda Accord EX Best Coupe/Sedan, $17,000-$28,000: Nissan Maxima SE Best Coupe/Sedan, $28,000-$45,000: Infiniti Q45 Best Coupe/Sedan, more than $45,000: BMW M5 Best Sports/GT, less than $13,000: Honda CRX Si Best Sports/GT, $13,000-$21,000: Mazda MX-5 Miata Best Sports/GT, $21,000-$32,000: Nissan 300ZX Best Sports/GT, $32,000-$50,000: Nissan 300ZX Turbo Best Sports/GT, more than $50,000: Acura NSX

Let's ask some simple questions:

1. How many Nissan/Infiniti cars are in the Ten Best?

TWO out of TEN.

2. How many Nissan/Infiniti cars are "Best Car" in their category?

FIVE out of TEN.

3. Do you see any Toyota/Lexus cars anywhere in the above?

NOPE.

Anybody who thinks that the automotive world experts felt that Nissan and Infiniti products were worse than Toyota or Lexus, needs to have their head examined. :D

'Nuff said.

Hooo BABY!!

Z shows up with the definitive WORD and all the people said.... AMEN!

Let's go a step farther. Out of the first list, SIX of the TEN are what you would consider "exotics" (NSX, M5, ZR-1, 911, 500, 348). Either they're limited production run cars, or they're well-beyond the price point for their class.

The second list tells me what I've known all along - Makes me wish I owned a low-mileage example of each... What a list of classics.

Have they done a recent top ten best in the world list? My guess is several of the '90 list(in their current iteration) would remain. Amazing, the staying power of some world-beaters.

An excellent point! I have to admit that I would love to have any of those cars!

Yeah! I used to have a Nissan 300ZX Turbo (1985) and considered a Maxima in 1996, but could not convince my wife to get a G20 ("too light") or Maxima ("too family sedan-y") ... she went with an Acura 2.2CL for the looks. This had essentially the same engine as the Honda Accord EX that year, but the car was heavier, so kinda underpowered.

They do similar lists pretty much every year. Unfortunately, I do not keep the subscription issues anymore ... too much accumulation in the garage, so I throw them out after reading! :(

I do not recall the contents of the later lists. I kept this one because a reprint was on the literature shelf at the dealer when I got my 1991 Q45 and I filed it away.

That's amazing! I always brag to my friends about Infiniti and Nissan being the best car for the money, this list seems to prove pretty free and clear that if they're not the best(which i think they ar), they're pretty freakin close! Thanks for the info, this will shut my honda friends up!
