I have a 2006 QX56 and the liftgate will not open automatically. The red indictor lamp comes on when driving saying the Liftgate is open.Yesterday, a store clerk closed it manually and since it will not open via the in care switch or with the key switch. It will close with the key switch. It clearly appears to be closed with the Liftgate Open light is on.Please advise.jerry

I'm a bit confused from the OP description whether the liftgate opens at all or is stuck shut.

If it's stuck shut because of a relay not working take a look at the BL section of the 2005 FSM, page BL-136, at what looks like a manual release latch close to the striker. If this really is a manual latch there should be an access panel on the trim and it would be mentioned in the owner's manual.

My trunk lock mechanism wouldn't release a couple of weeks ago and it was a string from the cargo netting laying on the striker. Do you see anything protruding out from under the tailgate, inside or outside? It may take a second person pressing the trunk release button while the other pulls up in sync on the tailgate. Good Luck.

Do a quick check and see if the rear hatch glass opens when you hit the Unlock button twice on your key fob.

If this is the case you may need a new rear switch assembly. I have seen this a few times and if your still under B2B warranty you should be taken care of.

i know this is kind of an old thread and you may have solved this problem, but for anyone who will search in the future, i have been trying different things to get my 07 QX56's liftgate to work with no luck the whole day, eventually locked myself in the rear by accident and had to use the emergency release to open the gate, closed it, came to open it manually to grab my flashlight and it opened by itself, I'm guessing that it was a communication malfunction somewhere which didn't know whether the gate was open or closed so it disabled the option? if anyone knows why releasing it from the E-release worked please shed some light, I've yet to see a solution online for this besides the "took it to nissan" and the cost followed.

What was the door doing?
Was it manually unlocking the door when you walked up to it and opened it?

If any one of a number of things go wrong in the auto system it shuts down for safety reasons. However it's default when off is to unlock (but not open) the hatch. This should operate when the remote button is pressed as well as the buttons on the dash or hatch. If that does nothing and the rear glass section opens I would inspect the latch itself.

Good Luck.
