I had always heard the intake valves on the VK56VD direct injection motors build up crud since there is no fuel passing over them but I was shocked to see just how much was there after taking off the intake manifold! I have included some before and after shots. The specks of yellow/brown in the dirty valves are just some walnut shell over spray before I cleaned them out. The engine has 146k miles and never used anything but top tier gas (Shell, etc.) 93 octane in this vehicle. I used a vacuum adapter from ebay with my shop vac and a home blaster tank. Pretty messy job but they cleaned up well!

Yep - This is the case with any direct injected motor... Had the same process done on our '13 Mazdaspeed 3.
