Hi all. I just joined the forum. I purchased a 1998 QX4 2 days ago and I'm having a problem. The truck runs great and smooth in 2 wheel drive but when I select auto over 30 mph it shakes and shimmies and gets worse as the speed increases. Any suggestions (besides leaving it in 2 wheel drive) would be greatly appreciated.

From reading the owner's manual, the car should be set to auto regardless of road Conditions (within reason). CV boots appear to be fine. My best guess is a problem with the transfer case or the computer that controls the variable ratio when set to auto. I'm hoping the problem can easily he solved-like low fluid or something. The truck seems to "buck" like all 4 wheels are out of sync. Any direction to look will help.

just keep it in 2wd unless you need the auto option. seriously, if you need 4x4 to stay in control on the street, you need better tires. the only time i ever use 4x4 is if im driving through a good 6-8 inches of snow in the road or on the trail.

Mine runs in auto on dry pavement with no shakes or shimmies. It only sends power if the wheels slip. Do you also experience this in "lock"?

Auto can be used for driving on paved or slippery roads

It's actually worse in the lock position. I don't have a problem using the 2 wheel drive but the book does say to keep it selected to auto. I was just wondering if this is normal or if I have a problem.

humm its hard to say without being there. but maybe your CVs are messed up, but i kindof rule that out because the r50 has drive flanges. so they CVs are always locked in. at what speed does this happen?

When's the last time you got a front end alignment? Just a thought
