I have a 99-1/2 QX4 that is stuck in 4wd. I have codes for the TPS & Knock sensor but don't think they are related?? The AWD light is on and it doesn't matter what I move the switch to it stays locked in 4wd. (Actually is in 4wd not just the light on.)

Thoughts??

drive in reverse for a few feet... should do it

the knock sensor is a common code with nissans, its easy to set off even when theres no failure, so ignore that one.

TPS... i dont know about that one. since youre in australia, have you checked out http://www.pcoa.org.au

Thank you,

I'll try that. TPS is causing the transmission to shift hard. I unplugged it and the shifts smoothed out. I ordered a new one.

Thanks for the Link but I am in Melbourne, Floirda. Wish I was in Australia!

Thanks

Again

I have a new job and we actually have a TPS department, although I have yet to come across any TPS reports.

The previous advice that you received about driving in reverse is good. I have had this happen when I move the switch to 2WD while the lever is in the 4-lo position. Mine is a 99 with the switch and a lever. i don't know if the 99.5 has the switch and lever, or just the switch. To fix mine, I find a quiet street, flip the switch to Lock and shift the lever to 4-lo. Then I drive about 50 ft, go to 4-hi, drive 50 ft, and flip back to 2WD. Works every time.

i know its bad but how bad is it to drive hhmm lets say 27 miles with the auto 4wd in lock mode, i was drving like 70-75 mph didnt feel a thing, no shaking not a bumpy ride nothing, it just drove fine i think i might have drove from ocean shores to Shelton like 68 miles with it on to because that was the last time i had it in 4wd lock, I didnt realize until i was at a stop light and i stepped on the gas and my steering wheel turned to the right. i looked down a freaked all i could do was give her dash a lil rub and say sorry. lol hope i didnt eff it up in the long run.

how bad? probably not bad. I once did the same thing for about 30 miles, didnt notice til i attempted a u-turn and it was binding up pretty gnarly.... then again, im on my second transfer case already cause my first one blew up a few years after that happened....

I think i got it out of 4wd but the light stays on. Also the indicator lights on the dash that show 4wlock, etc do not light. It has been sitting for a while and not driven. The 99.5 has only the switch on the dash. (I think that is about the only difference)

any other suggestions?

Ok, try out the following procedure. This is to see if there is a problem with your transfer case. Usually when the 4WD lamp stays illuminated that means there is a malfunction with the transfer case.

The light is blinking at 1 second. Does that indicate what is wrong?

Thanks

Ok, so when you follow the diagram and you get to the last part (Read the flickering of 4WD warning lamp), are you saying it blinks once after the "start signal" (4WD lamp illuminates for 2.5sec) and then just stays off?

I apologize for asking so many questions but I want to make sure I diagnose your problem correctly.

So in the last step, when you read the blinking of the 4WD lamp, it should read as follows:

4WD lamp ON for 2.5 seconds4WD lamp OFF for 1 secondCount the number of blinks here. Each individual number is separated by a 1 second pause.4WD lamp OFF4WD lamp ON and remains ON

So you're saying that the lamp does the following?

4WD lamp ON for 2.5 seconds4WD lamp OFF for 1 second4WD lamp blinks once (for 1/2 second)4WD lamp OFF4WD lamp ON and remains ON

I have a 2002 Infiniti QX4 and I believe it's getting stuck in 4WD when it's in the "Auto" mode. This is the first time it has happened and I have had it for almost 7 years now. I did just use 4WD lo about a month ago, but I followed procedure when I switched it into that mode (put the truck in neutral), so I don't think that was the issue. When I tried the procedure above from the one poster, the light kept blinking repeatedly real fast and never stopped. Could it be the transfer case? Any help would be appreciated.
