I want to replace the stock stereo on my 01 qx4. I have navigation so I have the single din. I've heard about the 2 ohms issue, but would like to keep my stock speakers. Also want my steering controls to work. I want to replace it because I want mp3 capability.

Anybody go through this? Which decks would work?

Have you checked out Crutchfield?

I replaced my stereo and kept my factory amp and speakers. To adapt the new stereo I used a Scosche SLC4 Speaker Level Converter ($23).

For the steering wheel controls I used a Metra Axxess ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface ($44).

And for the antenna and wiring harness:
- Scosche Radio Wiring Harness for 1995-Up Nissan Car Stereo Connector ($5)
- Scosche Ndab Nissan Diversity Antenna Adapter ($6)

The above options should allow you to use just about any current aftermarket head unit that will fit. I did this a few years ago, so the options now may be different. I originally used a single-din Sony, but have since switched to a double-din unit with navigation.

For what it's worth, I never installed the speaker level converter on mine. No idea why it worked as well as it did, but there was no background hum or other weird issues. Great sound quality with the radio connected to the factory wiring and no adapters. On the other hand, I'm installing a radio in my wife's MDX right now that has a similar Bose system and it was immediately clear that the SLC4 would be required.

I'm in the process of deciding which stereo upgrade to choose and I came up with two types of approaches:
1) You can get MP3 playback (plus Bluetooth if you want it) without replacing the head unit. Grom audio has an interface kit that is vehicle specific and works with your existing wiring harness and allows you to keep your steering wheel controls: http://gromaudio.com/store/all-niscdc.html

2) For a little more $ you can get an entirely new double DIN head unit with all the current features and input options (Bluetooth, USB, AUX,) plus touch screen UI while still keeping your existing amp and speakers. A simple way to do that would be to add this wiring harness adapter that incorporates audio transformers for properly balancing the inputs and outputs of the Bose system.

I replaced my 2-din with a JVC kw-r910bt from crutchfield too. It was pretty straight forward and crutchfield shows all the related parts that you would need when you put in the car's model.

I decided to also change the speakers. Should not need a harness for that but I'm a complete fool when it comes to anything electronic and wires: anybody know how the CD changer connects to the system? Is it one of the 4 harnesses that connect to the stock stereo (single din)?

I remember seeing a thread on here where someone did a step by step installing the entire stereo system in a QX4 or a R50 Pathy. Can't find it now.

'preciate your help :)

I have been rocking (not so much) a metra adapter in my Pathfinder and the volume and quality have been awful. I was able to play with the settings on my HU and get it audible at nearly full volume, but I just ordered the PAC ROEM unit this morning after seeing this thread. Hopefully this will alleviate my terrible audio.

RR425, what speakers are you going with?

This is the unit I got:

Looking at these speakers:

I don't understand anything about wires and audio, so hopefully they are compatible :D
Trying to figure out how to connect a CD changer to the unit I got.
