QX4 half-year VIN decoding

Can someone please educate me on the finer points of VIN decoding?

I currently own a 1998-ish QX4 and plan on ordering a set of rear shocks for it. The parts store wants to know if the vehicle is a 1998 or 1998.5, how can I tell this based on my VIN number?

If you get them from the dealer I think they ~$85/ea. They fit 97-99
