I've been searching around and having found any good info on the common problem with the cats on the R50's other than welding it and the normal Nissan repair kit.

Anyways, about 3 months ago I took our QX4 in for some warranty work and they replaced an oxygen sensor while working on it. I told them it had an exhaust leak and of course I find out that the cat is split. They offer to do the repair kit for $200 to which I told them no. I had been debating taking it back to let them do it, until I saw what the kit really consisted of. My question is couldn't I just buy some exhaust putty and 2 large clamps for $10 or so and end up with the same result, saving $190.

I would love to weld it but I don't have a welder available to me at the moment and I just want to do something to hold it over for a while. Any suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Your exactly right, save yourself the money and piece together your own kit, 12" industrial worm clamps are like $3.99 each, a tube of exhaust cement is like $2.99 and youll need like 3-4 feet (2 8-9" pieces per cat) of thin metal that they use, which you can simply bend to replicate the shape over a block of wood

Shouldnt cost you more than $20

OR, exhaust shop would probably remove, weld, reinstall for $50ish

Yeah after thinking about it, I think the exhaust shop may be the better route to go. I really don't wanna crawl under it and try to rig it up myself for $20 when for a little more I could probably get an exhaust shop to do it right.

Did you see my post about this topic?

Mine it 100% fixed with no chance of it happening again. Even nissan's fix doesn't last very long.

Get it welded and be done with it.

Yes I did actually, of course I didn't think about taking it to an exhaust shop at the time, I was just thinking that I didn't have a welder to do it myself. That's what I would prefer to be done anyways... I'd rather it last a while rather than a quick fix. I'm tired of riding around and sounding like i'm too cheap to get my exhaust fixed...

LOL it's the worst when you go through the drive through like McDonald's. I was so embarrassed listening to it reflect off the building.
