It seems that we have very little choice in tires for those of us with the 2001 17inch wheel. I spent 4+ hours yesterday researching on the internet for available tires for us. The by far 'best' rated tire that's currently manufactured in our size range (255/60/17 or 245/65/17) seems to be the Michelin Cross Terrain brand.

I'm definitely a more spirited driver and I wore these tires out in approximately 15k miles.

Have any of you found anything close or 'better'?

Allegedly, the Pirelli Scorpion series is one of the 'cheapest', and we all know how bad most of the OEM Goodyear tires are.

Hopefully there's something new on the market that I havn't heard about.

I did use Bridgestone Dueler A/T's on my Tacoma truck and they lasted near 50K miles, harsh ride though... Nitro

I've done the same research.

Seems like you want the same thing I want, so here are your two choices in order of my preference:

1) Hankook Ventus ST RH06 2) Toyo Proxes S/T

Here are your choices on where to buy.Hankook:1) http://www.1010tires.com/tire....+RH06

265/60R17 at $134.99 a piece. There is a shipping cost. (if that link doesn't work, just search for Hankook Tires on http://www.1010tires.com)

2) http://customwheelsmarket.com/....html 275/60VR17 at $108.00 a piece. FREE SHIPPING. THIS IS WHAT I WOULD BUY!

Note, 265/60R17 is near exact of 245/65/R17. But given prices and choices, I would definitely get the $108 a piece 275/60/R17. I promise you won't have any rubbing or any issues. I have a friend with 31" tires and he has no rubbing (revo's). Also, his speedo is actually MORE accurate now, he has a gps unit that tells his speed.

Toyo Proxes:1) Only buy them from ebay. They are really cheap.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...%3AIT

or search for item number: 7955250479 275/60R17They are $96.99 a tire +shipping.

Buy the Hankook Ventus ST RH06 275/60/R17. They're the cheapest, same specs as Toyo Proxes (420 AA) and both have outstanding reviews.

Hankook Ventus ST RH06 are also m/s rated, so you can go through occasional snow, but these are really wet/dry tires, so don't expect much.

I have bridgestone dueler h/p, or whatever is OEM on the 01 QX4. They are pretty bad in about any kind of weather, so Hankook Ventus ST RH06 would definitley be better than that. Can you believe the wear rating on OEM tires are 180??

Email me if you have any more questions.

Doesn't the Michellin LTX fit the QX4? Its a highly rated tire according to a couple of testes in Consumer Reports and Consumer Guide. It is a little pricey though.

Thanks for the comments. most of the tyres that are manufactured for our Infiniti factory suggested size(s), are highway type tyres. The Michelin LTX is definitely a great tyre along with the Michelin Cross-Terrain. Most of us with SUV's do the majority of our driving on the freeway, where these others excel at ride comfort, dry/wet, etc.

Then there's those of us more spirited drivers and those that live in rural areas that need a much more aggresive tire. That's where the Michelin Cross Terrain and the LTX fail to perform. Super soft (cushy-ride) sidewalls flex, which aggravate SUV side pitch, plus they then start to wear our quickly with side loads.

One tyre that has recently been given rave reviews by Consumer Guides magazine, is the Bridgestone Dueler series that are manufactured with the duel compound rubber (can't remember the special name for it, but you can find it by logging into Consumer Guides). One of these types is the Dueler H/L Alenza. This tyre is 'supposedly' a much better choice where more All-Terrain or curvy back roads are the driving norm; plus with the occasional off pavement excursion. I JUST found out that they have started manufacturing this tyre in our 245/65-17" size and have placed an order for the set. The tyres also have a 65k mile wear out warrenty and allegedly a full warrenty for tyre failure for the life of the carcass.

Many people are not aware that when highway type tyres get to about 1/2 life they loose a HUGE percentage of their wet/dry/braking ability which is compounded greatly by the very nature of normal SUV driving platforms.

Many of the SUV performance tyres out there are not made in our 17" needed size, although some are just now being released. My favorite tire shop wasn't even aware of the Dueler Alenza size being made available.

After a few weeks of driving I'll post back my results comparing these to the highly touted luxery SUV cross terrain tyre. Thanks for the replies and suggestions, they were all very helpful in sorting this out! Nitro

Update on the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza tyres: It's been raining here for the past week since I had the new tyres installed. These tyres are completely superior to the Michelins, WOW!!! There is so much traction that I can hardly burn out in the rain and it almost seems like I'm driving on dry roads with the amount of wet traction I'm getting.

Although the sidewalls are stiffer than the Michelins I do not feel any stiffness, just a nice all around steadyness you can feel even driving along in a parking lot. There's also less body roll.

Note: Tire Rack now has these at $129 each; so they are priced lower than the Michelin Cross Terrains ($160).Nitro

Another fairly new tire on the 245/65/17 market is the Firestone Destination A/T. A few years back I never would have considered buying them, we all know why, but the Destination A/T seems to be getting great reviews on Tire Rack, and is pretty reasonably priced. They also make a Destination LE--also with excellent reviews, but reports seem to indicate they lose tread really fast after 20k or so. If anyone has tried these please post, as my local Firestone dealer will match the Tire Rack's price and I would love to get a good set of A/T's that could rival the Scorpions. I had a set of Scorpions on my last vehicle (Grand Cherokee) and they were awesome at everything except treadwear.
