I have a 1990 240 SX SE. Original owner. Impeccably maintained. About five years ago, I put a Flowmaster exhaust and resonator on the car. It sounded good, if a little loud. I used the flow-through to increase performance. I just put a new Flowmaster 9424502 50 Delta Flow muffler and a Flowmaster 15150S Resonator on and the car is so loud I can't stand it. What happens to performance if I go back to a standard sound dampening muffler? I know it will be quieter, but will the performance be affected much? Will the car run hotter? I live in the city, do mostly city and freeway driving, and do not race the car. Any recommendations for making the car quieter while saving the performance? Thanks for any help.

Magnaflow makes XL Mufflers with baffled chambers. Not sure of your pipe size, but maybe look at part #13148. I looked at your Flowmaster 50 and see it IS baffled... so I'm not sure why it's so loud. Of course loud is an opinion, not a decibel level. Maybe go back to stock muffler and look to other areas for HP gains.

A dyno pull before and after will tell you your gains or losses (they are small in your situation).

Heat should not be an issue unless you go way outside of the original configuration (no half inch piping okay!).

There's always weight savings and those help with gas mileage as a bonus! (Throw a can of fix a flat in there and take out the spare tire and jack, etc.)

Quiet doesn't necessarily indicate restriction. The correct size main pipe with a good muffler on it and proper mandrel bends can be very quiet and not choke power. I had something similar to this on my old Silvia and it ran like a raped ape and idled a little louder than stock with a throaty rumble, not that raspy ricer sound of the knock off ebay crap.
