I'm gonna pick up a cheapo harbor freight engine stand soon and in case it doesn't have the proper sized bolts does anyone remember what size/thread/etc bolts they used to hold their CA to the engine stand? I have plenty of time to get them but I'd rather do it today than keep putting it off :D

I could just use the transmission bolts probably but I'd rather get some seperate bolts just for the stand since I don't wanna worry about losing them and will be putting them someplace hopefully safe..

You're going to have to get some extra bolts anyway because only two of the transmission bolts are long enought to go through the stand to the engine. I just brought my transmission bolts down to the local Autozone and matched up the sizes. I'm pretty sure they were 12mm .25 thread pitch.

Make sure you have a friend there to help you get the engine bolted to the stand because there's a good chance that the hoist will be pulling against you and it's a pain in the *** to pull on a 500 pound engine suspended by chains. (It was quite invigorating though :))

Take one of your transmission bolts down to your local Roaches/True Value Hardware store. They have just about every diameter, pitch, and length of thread you could hope for. Shouldn't cost you more than a couple of bucks.

They are 14mm bolts, you need four of them, two will plug on the top side of the block where transmission bolts go, you can use the transmission bolts, the other two will plug on the sides, one each side, you have to get yourself two 7 inch bolts with nuts, since the two side holes aren't treated.

i say invest in a metric thread gauge, then see what it reads, especially when working with aluminum or any sort of metal.

I'm looking at the service manual (pg. EM-34) and it shows pretty clearly that the motor is to be mounted to the stand via three bolts on the SIDE of the block. I have yet to see a picture of anyone bothering to mount their CA this way though. Does it matter?

I haven't seen anyone do it, but it would make things a HELL of a lot easier if it actually worked.

well, 2 bolts and 8 zipties (4 a side, after removing the transmission brackets and using higher mount points I didn't have long enough bolts) worked without trouble..
