I am working on building a motor, and a turbo set-up and I was wondering what I could do to decrease spool time. I know I could use a smaller turbo, but I was planning on make somewhere around 500hp at the track so I can't do that.

So far I have ordered cams, and I really didn't want to run nitrous it just costs to much to fill a tank. Will getting exhaust housing jet hot coated help? What about the downpipe? Any tips would be great.

when trying to build a 500 horse power being worried about how much things costs is going to increase the time to build that car.

the coating can help slightly. the best thing you could probably do is get good exhuast manifold. that or nitrous. not too many 500hp setups spool incredibly fast.

check out the phatka-t.com project car. ivan hit 500hp in that and it spools pretty decent

Using a well designed exhaust manifold in combination with a well designed downpipe can definately have an effect on spool times.

Both of those companies probably sell the best manifolds on the market for the KA-T right now. Why is spool such an issue? The only way I can see it being a problem for a track car is if you are dropping out of boost when shifting. Personally I like to spool around 3500rpm. Good luck.

You could maybe look in to getting a fancy (read, expensive) Garrett GT-series ball bearing turbo instead of a T3/TO4E. Something like a GT30R or GT35R, maybe? Garrett has compressor maps in their catalog. Anything ending in an "R" is a BB turbo.

well, its always a compromise when you are shooting for #'s. you sound like you have a goal of 500 hp or whp? so I can tell you what turbo would get you there and maintain the best powerband. answer isnt cheap though. GT35R.

i would rather see a 430 rwhp turbo ka running a t3/t04e with an awesome powerband versus a 430 rwhp turbo ka running a T66 with a short powerband. guess which one is gonna be more fun to drive, beat everyone on the street, and get better ET's at the track? the 430 rwhp turbo with the t3/t04e.

cam choices, intake manifold choices will change your powerband severely. it can make a car fun to drive on the street and have a good powerband to a more narrow-range powerband and feel sluggish in low end. it really just depends what you plan on doing with your car. if you only race people from a roll on the street (i know i know), then that setup might be fine assuming you keep the car in the powerband at all times, especially on the jump.

i can tell you this from my own experience and from Full-Race tests, a log manifold will spool sooner in the powerband but lack the top end from tubular designed manifolds. there's so many options to go with now, but hey, that makes it even more fun!

I'm no pro, but It would only make sense for lighter components, and anything that would increase air flow, to make for better response and quicker spool.

Depending on what management you're using, I know AEM has an anti-lag feature in it (used for launching mainly).

Spool time really isn't a major deal. I was just asking because since the motor is out, and I am spending money on it. I might as well do whatever I can to keep my power band as wide as possible. I am planning to use an AEM ems to control everything so if it has an anti-lag feature that would be great.

I really don't want to use nitrous because after spending 8-10 grand or whatever it comes out to I am going to need to save money for daily driver and getting a house, so $100 or more a week to refill a bottle is going to kill me on top of whatever maintaince, and other expense I will need to spend money on.
