i just bought a 1990 240sx coupe. the air intake system is pretty much missing. i am trying to get the car to start. i do have the maf, just not the plumbing for the air box,or the air box. i need to know what is the plug just behind the air flow meter? it is about 5 inches behind the air flow meter plug.

the car wants to start, its firing and getting fuel, just wont start.has plenty of spark and timing is good. new plugs and wires. not sure if maybe that plug needs to be hooked up to start.

Sounds like the intake air temp sensor. you have the intake holes plugged off? There can't be any leaks.... If your just trying to get it started see if it will run w/o the maf plugged in.

I do not have the intake tube or box. The throttlebody doesn't have anything attached to it. Will it not start without the pipeing?

Most cars will still start without the air intake being attached.they just run like crap,I was pretty sure it should still start without the maf being connected. So the other plug close to the maf plug is the air temp sensor huh? Id think it would start without that also. I am not that worried about it,just wanted to drive it while I finish up my supra. I have a sr to drop in tthe 240 once the supra is finished...hopefully ill figure it out.

Yes you have to have the piping. The air the iacv sucks through has to be metered if the maf is connected. If you have none of the piping hooked up but the maf is connected, the maf is obviously giving the ecu wrong info. This is mafs 101. The car should go into dummy mode with the maf unplugged and run and idle but you won't be able to go past 2500 rpm. Its not safe to run an engine with no air filter anyways so rather put some sort if intake ok it with an air filter out don't touch it.

You're thinking of MAP sensored vehicles. MAF setups need tubing, that's why stock silvertop 20v Corolla guys can't run open ITB's but stock blacktop 20v Corolla guys can.
