alright i just finished my swap. going in to the swap i thought i had a bad turbo. there was oil in the intake side. so i decided to run it before i replaced it. i heard the turbo spooling pretty smoothly today as i ran it for the first time. if a turbo has an oil leak, will it spool smoothly still?

As long as there is no shaft play it should work fine.

lots of times its normal for small amounts of oil to be in the intake inlet because of PCV and breather's. If the oil is coming out of the turbo cause of a bad seal you will be seeing a storm of clouds behing your car and you will know it....

If it feels good, looks good and boosts fine then it is fine :p Happy boosting...

how do you know that you have a shaft play? My turbo boosted fine to 14 psi, but there was oil comming out of the hotpipe and I can see it in my intercooler. Not much but worries me. Any idea?

Make sure that you change the oil a few times in the first 1000 miles or so. This will ensure that you get any crud out of the motor that may have built up from sitting in Japan or elsewhere.

take the intake off and put your finger on the turbo shaft.wiggle your finger.there should be very little movement.
