quick transmission question

i have my transmission off the engine right now and i just put my shifter in to see if i can shift threw any gears.. but it wont go anywhere.. it wont move.. is this how it is sappose to be?

how are you supposed to go any where when the transmission is out of the car and not attached the engine?

what? the shifter wont move.. not the car... obviously the car wont go anywhere.. i was just seeing if the shifter would move but it doesnt go anywhere.. its like stuck.. or does the transmission have tobe all on the engine for it to be able to go threw its gears.. i thought i would be able to go through the gears without the transmission on the engine.

it should be able to shift outside of the engine(i've done so @ junkyards)
