Ok, the 5 speed transmission in my 90 SE is shot. My neighbor has an 84 300zx n/a with a 5 speed that he'll sell me for $200. Can I use the transmission from the Z in my Maxima?

No, the 300ZX is RWD and the Maxima is FWD.

I'd check out http://www.car-part.com for another transmission for your car. A slight upgrade would be the 5-speed from a 92-94 SE Maxima. They had the VE30DE but the bolt pattern is the same. You will need axles and the hubs from one of those as well but the overall setup is slightly stronger than the stock transmission and most have a limited slip differential.
