The rule of thumb is 10 years old and your gas cap is due to be changed....I heard this on TV, apparently when its older it releases vapours from your gas tank and reduces fuel economy. Not sure if its true but looking at my old cap it was brown and didnt look very strong. bought a new one at canadian tire a month ago and ive had no issues and every time i refuel it seems very tight and great, only $9.

Word of warning on the the Canadian Tire gas caps. My parents had one on their Maxima and it didnt form a tight seal. Caused the check engine light to go on after a while and fumes could occasionally be smelled. If you get a mysterious check engine light in a month or two that may be the culprit.

It is just the gasket drying out right? I wonder if simply restoring the rubber is all that is needed. I know it is cheap for a cap, but softening the rubber could be a quick repair. They check caps for smog checks here.
