just a quickie(no pun intended), i'm looking at the kuhmo 712's for my 99Q 16*7 rim. according to the kuhmo site the 245 and the 255/50 will fit the rim. would like to go with the larger tire but remember seeing a post that the 255 doesn't fit a 7" rim. anybody have input? thanks, jeff

I've had 245 tires on 8" and 9" rims. 9 was perfect and 8 is a minimum IMO.

Jeff,I've been running the 712's in 245/50-16 all year on 16x7 Konig GTR's. They fit and run fine without any negative wear or handling issues yet. A 255 might be a bit much for a 7" though. My 245 extends 5/8" past the edge of the rim. I would assume an 8" rim would be best but you would have only 1/8" to spare; I like a little more cushion to prevent curb rash. The +40 offset on mine is perfect for the 7"; I think +35 would better center the wheel for 8"or 9", especially with 255's to prevent lock-to-lock rubbing. If you are on Eibach springs some here have complained about clearance issues with 255's.

I have 245's on the same exact rims and they're perfect. 255's were mounted and tested, and fit well also.

I don't have to worry about "curbing" a rim, either.:D

Are Kumhos the ultimate tires for a Q...probably not. Are they a good tire for my Q...definitely. Are there worst tires for the Q...most definitely! As to their worth, they are a good tire for the money but there are others that are close..Sumitomo HTR Z? The Yokohama AVS ES100's are a little more $ but a quite a few ex 712 owners pick them over the 712's. The HTR Z's ($82) pass the minimal Q's 95 (1521 lbs) load rating with a 96 but only have a 160 AA rating...heavy car soft tire; they won't last long. The ES100 (93$) also has 96 load rating, treadwear rating 280 AA A. The Kumho($83) has a 97 (1609 lbs) load rating, 280 AA A. When you go up on the Kumho to 255/50-16 ($87) the load rating jumps to a 99 (1709 lbs). The Kumho's are heavy tires for their sizes with a stiff sidewall. They'll flat spot in 3-4 days sitting but they smooth out pretty fast. I have them on 2 cars but might try another tire for the Miata next time, the jury isn't in yet on long term service for the Q but they seem to match up better on a heavier car. They look plenty big on the Q, not in the BMW 850 category but my Q still looks and handles better than the OEM's I took off early in the year.In short every ounce you add to the Q's unsprung weight will degrade the ride some so the size and brand choice is up to the owner and what he want's to compromise in ride quality to obtain an added level of grip and better looks. Don't be surprised when the heavier wheel/tire combo shortens the component life of existing suspension parts. Dennis has covered the + tire size warnings in great depth many times here and he's right. It's a price we all pay for our vanity I guess.

steve, really got me thinking about the es100's. according to all sites, they seem to be an incredible tire. problem is, tirerack.com and tires.com are sold out and they're on back-order. scheduled for my mounting next wed., haven't bought anything yet, but this close, to waiting another couple weeks on the 100's. thanks, jeff

I'm trying to decide right now too for my 17x7's, I was leaning towards the ES100s but when you compare them to the Firestones the pale in comparison. I would save a bunch of money on the ES100's over the Firestones FZ's, any comments on that?

Oh, the 255's are too big for the 7' rims, stick with 245 at the biggest.

i will be going with the 245's, don't want to take a chance with anything bigger. i'm with you, i'm sure the sz-50's are a better tire, but because of constraints on the wallet, i'd rather put it to other maintenance items. jeff

If you have not committed to these yet, you may want to do a search first. There is a lot of information here for reading that will save owners time and money.

Jeff, I have 245/50R16 on 16x7 rim and think 255 will rub (may be not all brands, but many). Because right now it's barely 5 mm left between inner sidewall and the strut in the front (rears are fine of course).

Good choice Jeff. I don't think you will have any clearance issues if the stock offset on your new rims is +45. A +40 would be ideal and keeps the scrub radius almost the same as OEM but isn't that critical. Let us know how the ES100's balance out and feel on a Q...additional tire options are always good. Are they a uni-directional tire? Steve

I'm going for the ES100's also, over $200 bucks cheaper than the Firestones and they look so sweet....

Reading the previous posts will reveal that winter tires are winter tires and four season tires are a compromise not optimized for winter operation.

Lots of information here if one searches, reads and considers.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t

You'll need some acorn lugs... Don't buy at the tire place - Go to pepBoys or some place similar.

I ordered mine from Scottsdale... very reasonable price - in line or lower than local parts place.

Jeff,Keep track of how much weight the Hunter machine calls for...I'm curious how much better they balance out than the Kumhos I had trouble with.

On a 1990-1996 Q, the stock offset was 45mm, I believe. On 1997-1999 Q, it was 40mm (again, "I believe").

Rims with these offsets ought to work on any Q as long as you do not go crazy on the width (rims and tires!) :)
