I purchased a OEM waterpump off of a guy on ebay for my Rb20. He stated that in the auction the pump was from his RB20. After getting the pump, I went out to put it on my motor on the engine stand, but noticed that it was the notch like the Rb25 pump. Ive heard that this will not work on the Rb20, but he replied he had it on the car for 5000k miles and it worked just fine. Is this true, or should I just sell the damn thing and buy the Rb20 water pump from NismoParts? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I went through 7 pages on search related topics but couldnt find an answer.

For oem parts like this I would get everything from Nismo Parts. Shay over there could answer the question if you want. He seems to know everything as he has or had a RB20 in his S13. Great guy he is.

RB25/RB26 Water pump will NOT work on RB20.

Let me find my old post and quote it here...edit: zerothread?id=226242

The slot will expose the water passageway underneath and you will not be able to get the pump to seal. In that drawing, the pink line shows the water passageway, the yellow is the slot outline and the light blue is where you'll see the leak. The gap that is created by the slot is bigger than can be safely sealed with RTV.

Sell that pump and get an RB20 pump with the small hole. It's possible the later/earlier RB20s have slightly different passageways; I have an older silvertop with "RB20" timing cover, and there is no way the 25 pump will work on my engine.

Thats really interesting because I have been running an rb25 pump on my rb20 for about a year now with only minor overheating problems which I attributed to a small radiator. Now I am rethinking this. I sealed the pump really well with RTV, but perhaps that is all that is holding the coolant in, yikes. Damn it, now I have to go and tear it apart again before summer :-( . Oh well, good chance to spruce the motor up :-).

Hi Jesse, do you have an early or late RB20? The leak on mine was so bad it wouldn't hold any pressure. So I don't see how it could be sealed and work under pressure with only RTV, unless the block passageway is machined slightly different on our engines.

since you have it on hand, just bolt that sh1t up and go. what's the hesitation, slot it slightly if the bolt doesn't line up 100%; put in a good bead of RTV and call it a day.
