what does this do? I was in the process of swapping manifolds and my new manifold didn't have room to clear this, so I had to get it out of the way. I didnt't hurt anything by hammering it to the side right? and I'll replace the broken hose of course...

Its your stock oil catch can. It has a hose coming from the bottom of the catch can to the back of the motor. A lot of people remove them and just run a hose to a filter. No worries.

it's the black box in the center of the picture with the broken hose coming out of it.

so just replace the broken hose and call it a day? I guess I could remove it later, seeing as it looks ridiculous now.

Yes sir, just replace the broken hose and bolt it down.
Make sure the hose on the bottom of the catch can is hooked up also.
