will the ca18 engine work with the ka transmission?

not directly and probably not at all

some say and have done sr and rb trannies with the ka bellhousing on a ka and vise versa. internally the same jsut bell housings can be swapped to make it work

Why not? All the S-chassis MT gearboxes were the same.

Still, you'd run into the issue of finding a CA18DET bellhousing. I suppose if you're REPLACING your transmission, then you'll be fine, but if you don't have a CA bellhousing, you probably should just find a CA transmission.
