Hmm, that's a good question. When I got mine, they tried to sell me a used G and I looked inside and saw that gaudy shifter on an 04 and I was like, "Mmm, nope, nothing with that. I want the nice looking one."

I'm not sure, maybe someone who has taken the center console area apart could confirm this, but I think you would have to replace the whole center trim piece in order to install the newer one. I'm sure it can be done.

4drmadness changed out the shift knob on his 04 automatic sedan. The new shifter gets pushed down in order to disengage the "lock".

Maybe he'll chime in with info.

I think you may have to replace the whole shifting assembly because the 03-04 model knobs move differently than the 05+ knobs, so it could be an expansive project.

I totally agree with you on the shifter. I think there is a huge improvement over the 05+. If I had an 03 or 04 I would do that mod for sure. I know on the 07+ sedan you can put the M shift knob on it. It looks nicer has some stiches on it. Hope somebody will chime in and comfirm if you can swap to 05 shift knob.

I'm not sure, but I think that both have a rod that goes through the center of the shift shaft (hehe). If so, swapping knobs may not be that difficult.

A_C_Fanatic,

Why don't you just take your shifter apart (seriously) and take pictures. Then we can compare that to an 05+ and stop the speculating

All this talk about knobs shafts and rods, I'm starting to wonder if I'm on the right form

In all seriousness, I did note this particular improvement in the 05x I tested prior to getting mine... I just wanted a G, never knew how bad the 1st gens got it, otherwise, I'd be in a 05 coupe, 6mt

I also thought, "I won't miss shifting", but got sick of auto transmission real quick
