I can buy the front wheel bearing and new seal all over the place or I can by the fully assembled hub for just a few bucks more. The question is, to replace the bearing, does the hub need to be removed and the old bearing pressed out and new one pressed in or can the bearing be replaced without removing the hub?

Looks like the bearing is removed from the back of the hub - so it has to be removed from the spindle. Check out FA-11 in the factory service manual if you have a copy.
