Saturday morning my dad called me and told me he was in a lot of pain while trying to urinate. He wasn't able to do anything all morning and was in extreme pain. I rushed him to the hospital because he's running on only 1 kidney. (one was removed from a cancer scare 2 years ago.....turned out to be badly infected when they got in there) They ran tests etc.....has a lot of infection but his prostate is swollen which is a sign of kidney or prostate cancer. Not sure yet exactly what is going on. I get him home late Saturday afternoon only to get a phone call 1st thing Sunday morning that my grandmother was rushed to the hospital around midnight. She has had lung cancer for a few years and been fighting hard. The tumor recently started growing again and very rapidly. Haven't been able to stop it this time. She has been unable to breathe. They said she had extremely low levels of oxygen and she is on a breathing machine in the hospital now. They said the lungs shutting down is the final stage of lung cancer.

For those of you who pray.....please keep my dad and grandmother in your thoughts when you do.

GR

My prayers are with you and your family. I lost my mother in December of '99 to ovarian cancer and can definitely relate. The weird part is that when she was younger she had a so-called full historectomy (sp?). If you need support or just a friend, email me at [email protected].

I hope everything turns out ok, and I will pray for you. Cancer runs in my family as well, and I hope everything, god willing, will be righted.

No matter how big we get, no matter how many members we achieve, it is imperative to me that we always remain family.

Aprille, please keep us posted. Thinking of you and your family...

Thank you all so much for all the thoughts and prayers. I appreciate it more than you know and so does my family.

This is my first day back home from being at the hospital since Saturday morning. Still unsure of my dad's condition but he seems fine and we hope it's nothing.

My grandmother who went in Saturday night isn't doing as well. At 5 pm on Sunday, shortly after I fed her dinner, she laid down to rest. I turned around to eat my dinner and she began gasping for breath. Within minutes she was unconscious and nurses/doctors ran in to help. She remained unconscious and unresponsive to anything until about 11 pm that night. She is still very confused and at times having either flashbacks of her past and/or hallucinations. Her lung cancer has now consumed about 80% of her lungs, her adrenal glands, kidneys and lymph nodes. She will be going home in the next few days so she may pass in the comfort of her own home with her family by her side.

The sidenote to this is that my uncles first wife(the mother of 2 of my cousins) also has a mother with lung cancer. I guess at some point she was my grandmother as well or some relation to me by marriage. I never knew her very well. She died Saturday around 7pm in her home from lung cancer that had spread through her body. So my cousins have a funeral to go to Wednesday(tomorrow) as well as preparing for whatever is to come with this grandparent.

Again, thanks for all your prayers and thoughts.

Aprille

Thanks James. What's bad is she doesn't know she's dying. Quite a while back she told her doctor and all of the family that she did not want to be made aware of her situation. She signed over power of attorney to my aunt and told us she didn't want to know anything. She did that because the last time the doctors told her that the cancer had grown a tiny bit she gave up hope, stopped fighting and it took us weeks to snap her out of it. So she thinks she's fine and going home because she's all better and nothing is wrong. I think she should know so she could say the things she needs or wants to say, give any requests, do all she can while she has the opportunity etc..... We'll just wait and see. I just don't want her to hurt. I can't be selfish and hook her up to a machine and keep her here because I know she'll never improve. I just hope she isn't in pain. Thanks again everyone.

Aprille, I'm very sorry to hear about your family, especially the imminent death of your grandmother :( You and your family will be in my prayers, and I hope things make a turn for the better soon. I dont know how old your grandmother is, but hopefully she has led a long, full life, and will be able to pass on to a better place now where she will be happier. As for your father, an enlarged prostate IS pretty common among older men, and even prostate cancer can be treated frequently with excellent results. As an example of this I'll offer my best friends dad, he had prostate cancer about 8-10 years ago, was operated on, and has had perfect health ever since. With any luck its something simple that can be treated non-invasively though, and he can be back to his good old free peein self soon!
