I'm just trying to check my coil packs to see that they all operate fine. I checked the resistance between the + and - terminals on each coilpack, and they all gave me a reading of 1.0 to 1.1 ohms. Is that an okay range, or is there a problem with them?

Now I checked them one at a time, by just pulling them out and unhooking the electric connection. Was I supposed to check them with the car running or in the on position or still attached to the spark plug? Just wasnt' clear on that, thanks alot!

You can test them that way but to get a test of its real performance you will need a tool to read the output of the coil. WAEKON makes a good spark tester (tests the strength) and a C.O.P. specific one. I have the normal one as it still works for coil over plug just not as well but the coil specific one is only good for coil over plug if that makes sense.

oh okay, cool. Was that the right way to test them then, how I explained it above? Just wasn't sure if I did it right. Thanks for the info, I'll look into that. I also heard you can just pull them one at a time whilet he cars running, and if you can tell a difference in the way the engine runs, it's a good coilover. Is this safe to do also? Thanks.

Anyone know the proper way to test a coilpack to see if it's operating properly? I want to be totally sure. Thanks!

So there's no other way to test a coilpack to see if it's working properly?

You can test the resistance of the coil but there are still other things that will affect it performance. How are the boots and what condition are they? Is the coil arcing into the walls through the boots? The tool that was talked about is the only real way to test for the output of the coil.

You did not mention if you are having a problem, like is the engine misfiring??? If so, use a non-contact pyrometer on each port of the exhaust manifold. If one port is much cooler than the others than that cyl is not firing. Then, swap the coil pack with one from a cylinder that is firing and see if the cool port of the exhaust manifold moved to the cyl where you put the suspect coilpack. If your cold cyl is still in the same spot, the coilpack is fine.

BTW you can also use this process to diagnose fuel injectors and spark plugs.
