Queston about a plate

I recently had a motor swap, ka for a ka. There's this gap between the transmission and motor. I've figured out that the motor plate goes there after I found it in the mechanics junk pile. >.> So I've been driving without that plate in (which I know I probably shouldn't do)

So I was wondering what exactly does it do and if I'm going to ruin anything because its not in there. Also the car wont go into reverse without killing the engine and first is extremely tight, would this go away if I get that plate back in there?
