I've been fascinated with nissan having a vehicle with a true keyless operation for a while so i bought a 2007 Maxima Service Manual. However, there are a few questions i have about it.

The goal - Adapt the Intelligent Key system into my 300zx. Reading over the manual it seems there are 5 modules that all communicate via the CAN bus.

The intelligent Key system uses 3. The Intelligent Key module, BCM (body control module), and the IPDM.

There are a few features that the BCM communicates to the ECU for. Climate control to tell the ECU to turn on the A/C compressor and there are a few features that the IPDM controls (window wipers, ect) that i dont plan to use.

I want the keyless system and alarm and thats all. The Z's climate control already is a smart computer of its own.

I guess my question is before i go mass order a ton of parts from Nissan is if the ECM is missing from the loop, will the system still operate or will the missing ECU render it all useless. That question is not answered by the manual.

I would hazard a guess that the ECM has to be programmed to process the request sent via the CAN bus. If the process request comes in and the ECM doesn't know what to do with it, then it will render the command useless and discard it. Or it could possibly do something slightly more drastic with the command and misinterpret it for something entirely different and send out a command to kill engine controls and fuel management. Of course, that's a worst case scenario.

the 96 doesnt have the CAN bus. I'm not worried about it.

As i said the features that the BCM talks to the ECU for is the climate control features, which i dont plan to use.

My worries are if the missing Maxima ECU will cause a fault in the other modules communication and render the other components useless without the ECU.

I'd talk to the head techs at your local dealer. They may be able to tell you more. Might also be worth checking out reputable alarm/remote starter installer in your area. If they have experience with the '07 Maxima's keyless system, they might be able to help you out. Be careful, though, as a lot of alarm installers don't really know what they're doing with these types of cars.

Sorry we weren't able to help you more.

Keep us posted, though. I'm interested in hearing how this turns out.
