I was wanting to do some reading up on the different tuning options out there for my car. I have a 97 s14 that is 5 speed swapped. I have a 5 spd and auto ecu so i can use either. I would really like to get more into the tuning it myself rather than a mail order tune. Everything I keep finding says it is for obd1 only. I know this is a noob question and I did a ton of searching but nothing seems definite or that informative. Can you use nistune now with obdII? What about other rom burning setups? Like I said I am wanting to do lots of readup before I either decide to go kat, or sr. I have 3 spare s14 obdII motors, harness and the works so if the tuning support is there I will probably lean that way. Also any good forums or sights, or even books that would be recommended to read up on about tuning?
Thanks, and sorry for the novel.

You have 3 spare KA's? This is good for me to know... haha

As far as the tuning for OBDII, I haven't heard of anyone really messing with it for the 240. As far as I know all the mail order tuners just use an OBDI ECU with an adapter cable so its plug and play with the OBDII harness. There's no real performance advantage in using OBDII, all of the extra stuff is basically just for emissions control.

btw, recognize the front clip? \/

lol you got it on there! looks good! Did those brackets fix your problem you were having? I have been talking to a few people in another thread. I didn't realize the obd1 s13 ecu would run everything with a harness adapter. I will just go that route for tuning. I have the ka in my car and 2 more laying around. I am in the process of picking up an entire DOHC 5 speed driveline, everything from pedals to driveshaft to ecu and in between. I will be looking for a vert preferably or possibly a hatch to start messing with.

Lots of reading to do! x_x

Here are some useful forums with a lot of info, might have to dig and search for some answers though.

It's common for people to get an adapter that allows the S13 ECU to connect to the S14 harness, and you can tune it like that from there.
If you want to tune it yourself, I recommend going with a Calum or Nistune daughterboard, as they allow you to change the tune in realtime.

If you have a regular mail order daughterboard with a tune on there, you'll have to take off the EEPROM chip everytime you want to upload a new tune to it.

Thanks Razi that is exactly kind of info I am looking for. It is for sure a ton easier to find info on the tuning once you start looking at the s13 ecu instead of s14. I didn't realize ecus could be swapped so easily. I wonder if that would help the people swapping s14 5 speeds. It was a PITA to find an s14 5 speed transmission.

Guess I lucked out with mine, its an early 95. Looks like an S14, but underneath its all S13 OBDI stuff haha. And yeah that new mounting bracket fixed everything, just getting the new door installed today then hopefully painting by next week. Then I just need a few more parts before I swap over the driveline from the S13. So if you're looking for an S13 hatch shell and you can wait a few weeks...

I'll be posting a thread in the classifies section pretty soon with all the leftover parts from this project before too long.
