Questions about Z32 ownership

Sadly, I just totaled my S14, so I've been looking into some different cars. I won't be buying for at least a year. In general, how expensive/difficult are Z32s in terms of maintenance? The 240SX was pretty reliable and cheap, but stock performance is pretty sad in a straight line. I'd like to find something a little quicker stock that woudl respond well to bolt ons, and a Z seems like a good prospect in theory. I remember hearing that VGs are expensive and difficult to work on though, and that the cars have some problems. I appreciate any and all frank responses about this.
