By regular gas you mean like 87 octane? I've used 87 and never had a problem

The timing chain needs to be replaced every 100k. My owners manual actually states to use 87 Octane unleaded gas. Mine is a 99 with 128k miles now and other than the cassette player, it doesn't have a single mechanical flaw. Of course every vehicle is affected by the maintenance and care it had before you get it, so pull a CarFax and make sure it hasn't been upside-down in a lake somewhere.

Although it's underpowered, I love mine.

The timing belt would have to replaced every 105k miles.

With a compression of 8.5 (I believe), regular gas would suffice. 01 and later would need premium.

Its an excellent vehicle and with basic and timely maintenance, should last a really long time. I think these are actually slightly more reliable than the 01+s. Only slightly so.
